Trekkers are mostly happy to behold the Everest from as close as possible. However, for mountaineers, a successful Everest expedition is mounting. The Everest expedition via the South Col remains the most popular choice among mountaineers since the route has the most favorable chances of getting to the peak both time-wise and route-wise.

From the Everest base camp a short walk along the moraine leads to the ice-fall with large seracs and crevasses that are considered to be one of the major obstacles of the expedition. Each year, experienced Sherpas fix ropes and ladders along the way, which make things easier for the climbers to overcome this hurdle to get to Camp 1. From there a gradual climb takes you to Camp 2 near the top of the Western Cwm. Thereafter, you will be walking your way up to the Lhotse Face to Camp 3 which is followed by Camp 4 on the South Col. The route gets steeper  as it leads up to the crest of the Southeast Ridge from where the going gets somewhat easier, but the rigours reappear on the severe climb to the South Summit. The subsequent negotiation of steep rocks and snow grooves of the notorious Hillary Step give the mountaineers an access to the final easy ridge to the summit.
