The first section of the upper Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) starting from Kanchenjunga Basecamp via Nangola Pass offers trekkers an extraordinary adventure through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world. This section encompasses a challenging and diverse route, taking explorers through remote villages, high mountain passes, and lush valleys.
The journey commences at the Kanchenjunga Basecamp, located at the foot of the majestic Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak. Trekkers are immediately captivated by the awe-inspiring views of snow-capped peaks and pristine alpine scenery. From here, the trail gradually ascends towards the Nangola Pass, a formidable mountain pass standing at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters (18,700 feet).
As trekkers traverse the Nangola Pass, they are greeted by panoramic vistas of towering peaks and sweeping valleys. The pass serves as a gateway to the hidden gem of Olangchung Gola, a remote village tucked away in the mountains. Olangchung Gola offers a unique opportunity to experience the traditional lifestyle and culture of the local Sherpa people, as well as stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Continuing on, the trail descends through verdant forests and crosses suspension bridges over roaring rivers. Trekkers arrive in Thudam, a picturesque village situated at the confluence of the Tamor and Thudam rivers. This tranquil settlement serves as a rest stop for weary trekkers, providing a chance to soak in the natural beauty and interact with the friendly locals.
Leaving Thudam behind, the trail leads to Chamtyang, another enchanting village along the route. Here, trekkers can immerse themselves in the rustic charm of the traditional houses and interact with the hospitable inhabitants. Chamtyang also offers a glimpse into the unique cultural practices and religious traditions of the region. Continuing further, the trail ascends to Hunggaon, a village located amidst terraced fields and lush greenery. The panoramic views from Hunggaon are truly mesmerizing, with cascading waterfalls and snow-clad peaks creating a dramatic backdrop.
From Hunggaon, the trail takes trekkers via Hattiya, a remote settlement nestled in the mountains. This section of the trail is known for its challenging terrain, with steep ascents and descents. However, the rewards are plentiful, as trekkers are treated to unparalleled views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Finally, the trail leads to Tumlingtar, a bustling town and transportation hub. This marks the end of the first section of the upper GHT route starting from Kanchenjunga Basecamp via Nangola Pass. Tumlingtar provides trekkers with various amenities, including accommodation options, restaurants, and transportation facilities.
The first section of the upper GHT route starting from Kanchenjunga Basecamp via Nangola Pass, Olangchung Gola, Thudam, Chamtyang, Hunggaon, Hattiya, and concluding at Tumlingtar offers a remarkable blend of natural beauty, cultural encounters, and physical challenges.
